Collect data

With the right ways to collect data, your engagement strategies can go from being a shot in the dark to being very effective.

The Student Success Group ensures that key performance metrics at MTSU had identified, measured, and regularly tracked. This is what drives our plan. Reports from many universities are the same. But MTSU is different in a few important ways.

First, there are weekly reports with key performance measures that are sent to all members of the leadership team. At MTSU, another difference is that every key leader is expected to know their numbers. This means that everyone, from deans to managers of advisors, must always know how their area is doing.

Keep testing your assumptions

We’ve all heard the saying, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results.” But it is still easy to get stuck in the same routine of looking at the same old metrics and coming up with a slightly different way to use the same old engagement strategies month after month, year after year. Sometimes it’s best to start over, find new data, and put long-held assumptions to the test to see what new strategies come out.

One possible strategy is “constant incremental innovation,” which means starting small projects all the time that add to the knowledge and work that goes into keeping students. MTSU changed its advising software and got a new degree audit package. However, incremental innovation isn’t just about new technologies; it can also be about new processes or ways to get student feedback.

Plan each step of the student’s journey.

Everyone knows that students in their first year or even their first semester are most likely to drop out. But did you know that 10% of students who drop out before graduating have 90% of the credits they need to finish their degree? And 75% of those who didn’t finish had credits toward their degree.

These results from an analysis that Civitas Learning did on 53 institutions show how important it is to have targeted advising and outreach strategies near the end of a student’s degree, not just at the beginning.

Offer more ways for students to graduate.

The college student of a few decades ago is nothing like today’s college student. Students start school at different times in their lives and juggle many different roles and jobs. But are we changing what these students can do to ensure they can finish their degrees? Online classes and better help for students who only go to school part-time can help.

A study from Arizona State University shows that just offering online courses can help keep students. Online courses have linked to higher rates of staying in school and graduating and cost savings of up to 50%.

Another interesting fact from the same study showed that at Houston Community College (HCC), students who took an online or blended course were 9 to 10 percentage points more likely to keep in school after their initial year. Increasing access to and help for part-time students is especially important to help minority groups keep more of their students.

Part-time students don’t graduate as often as full-time students, but this is even less likely for black and Hispanic students. A new report from EAB found that taking part-time classes made it harder for Hispanic and black students to graduate by 39% and 31%, respectively, but it only made it harder for white students to graduate by 29%. Improving the help these part-time students can get can be a key way to get more people to stay in school.

More communication

Having more chances to talk to at-risk students greatly affects how many of them stay in school. The University of Texas at Austin’s Center for Community College Student Engagement has found that more frequent and in-depth advising helps students stay in school.

For example, at Georgia State University, where they spent $2 million per year on more academic advisors, the graduation rate went up by 20 percentage points. The length of advising seemed to affect retention rates in the same study.

Students whose meetings with an advisor lasted longer than 30 minutes had higher engagement scores than those whose meetings lasted between 16 and 30 minutes. It also matters who the student’s advisor is and when the student has to see an advisor.

The three-year graduation rate at Cleveland State Community College went from 14% to 22% because of new plans in both of these areas. But advising isn’t the only way to connect with students and talk to them more.
